Vet Guides

Going to the vet can be tough--whether it’s finding the right vet, transporting your pet there (anyone else having difficulty coaxing your kitty into a carrier?), or an emergency situation at three in the morning--I know I’ve sat in the waiting room at an animal hospital that late.

Tip-Top Vets in the Brooklyn Area

To make things a little easier for all you pet owners (or maybe, like me, you feel like your pet owns you) out there, here’s Fauna Care’s list of the tip-top vets in the Brooklyn area:

Brooklyn's Finest Animal Clinic is headed by Dr. Remona Rhooms, who, after working at the largest animal shelter in New York City, then at a large 24/7 emergency practice, took her knowledge with her and opened up a “second home for your furry family member.”

New and returning clients can call in or book an appointment online, and house calls are made on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Reviews

Top reviewers for Brooklyn’s Finest rave about Dr. Rhooms’ friendliness with both clients and pets! One client writes that though other vets in the area were nice, “none were as great as Dr. Rhooms personally speaking to me and giving me advice about the kitties (these were the first pets I was adopting, so I was a bit nervous) and I knew I had to go with Dr. Rhooms. Then came the day where I brought the kitties in and wow was Dr. Rhooms great with them! She was able to check them out, give them their tests, and vaccinate them without issue."

With a five star rating on Yelp, Greenwood really does click with their new (and existing) clients! Their vets have been described as knowledgeable, informative, transparent, with a great “bedside manner” and a love of animals that clearly shines through.

Reviews

Compassion, pricing and professionalism are prevalent in reviews, which is impressive considering the facility is a 24 hour emergency care service. One striking story was of a reviewer, Monique’s, dog Rocko passing as she got into the emergency room--staff rushed into action and though they could not save Rocko, they were very comforting in the reviewer’s time of grief.

When your pet has become suddenly ill, or your regular vet does not have the equipment or expertise necessary to treat your beloved child (your pet is your child, too, right?), head on over to Bluepearl Brooklyn, one of Bluepearl’s national locations. The facility is open 24 hours, so when Fido decides to eat something poisonous at four a.m., you know where to go.

Reviews

While their prices are (expectedly) higher than other vets, reviewers detail Bluepearl staff’s efficiency, compassion and calm, often checking in with not only patients but with owners as well. One vet, Dr. Goodman, often started with, “If it were my dog…” instantly making pet owners feel assured that they are in the right hands.

For More Exotic Pets

Did you know it’s illegal to keep a ferret as a pet in New York? Me neither. You’re also not allowed tarantulas, roosters or turtles more than four inches in length.

But for other exotic pets, here’s where to go for all their health needs. (And for more illegality, check out Brooklyn's underground world of illegal pets)

With scheduled and walk in appointments 7 days a week, Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group could not get more convenient. The clinic, despite only being around for the past 10 years has the ability to see pretty much any exotic, except for alligators (which are probably definitely illegal to keep as pets anyway) and has USDA accredited vets for international health certificates, in case you’re traveling abroad with your six ferrets.

If you’re not traveling with your six ferrets--in fact, you’re staying home with them because who could imagine that sort of stress, Vinegar Hill makes house calls to Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, 7 days a week, so you’re set. Reduce your pet’s (and your own!) stress today and book a house call!

Reviews

Reviewers rave about Vinegar Hill’s knowledge of exotic animals, from turtle to rodent to bird care. The entire staff has been noted as friendly, while their vets are open, honest and efficient. Reviewers comment that while the price is a little higher than others, it was worth it to see their pets properly and knowledgeably cared for. Clients are sent reminders about appointments and often same day appointments are available--talk about convenient!
